The Open Shows are organized and staffed by the MASTER GARDENERS OF OCEAN COUNTY for the Ocean County Board of Agriculture. Master Gardener Volunteers are certified by Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County, after receiving extensive training and education. They assist Rutgers Cooperative Extension in providing reliable gardening and horticultural information to residents. Master Gardeners staff a Horticultural Helpline: 732-349-1245 Master Gardeners also provide tick identification, plant diagnostics, and soil pH testing at our location: Agricultural Building 1623 Whitesville Road, Toms River
In addition to these services, Master Gardeners offer seminars for the general public, maintain a display garden at the Toms River location, host educational displays at the Ocean County Fair and at other events, and are involved in many other gardening-related activities in the community. 1. Entries must have been made by the exhibitor after August1, 2007. Exhibitors do not have to reside in Ocean County. 2. No exhibitor may advertise or solicit orders. 3. Sections to be judged separately are: Youth (under age 18) Adults (age 18 and over) Special (Residents of nursing homes or rehabilitation hospitals, and disabled exhibitors) 4. Entry tags must accompany all exhibits and must include the division and class number. Entry tags can be obtained at the time of entering entry at the fairgrounds, from the website www.oceancountyfair.com or in advance at: Agricultural Building 1623 Whitesville Road , Toms River, NJ. 5. Entries not meeting class requirements will be disqualified. 6. The Fair Committee will not be liable in any way for loss due to water, fire, theft, acts of God, or any other causes. 7. All entries (except Foods and Cake Decorating) can be brought to the fairgrounds on Tuesday, July 8 from 5 PM to 9 PM or Wednesday, July 9 from 12 NOON to 9 PM. Judging will be conducted on Thursday, July 10 and Friday, July 11. 8. Food entries and Cake Decorating entries can be brought to the fairgrounds on Wednesday, July 9 from 12 NOON to 6 PM. Judging will begin at 6 :30 PM. Food entries and Cake Decorating entries can be picked up after 9 PM the same evening. If your item needs refrigeration bring closer to 6pm. There is no refrigeration. 9. All entries must remain on exhibit for the duration of the Fair. 10. All entries (except Foods and Cake Decorating) must be picked up on Sunday, July 13 between 5 PM and 6:30 PM.
AWARDS1. Ribbons will be awarded for meritorious entries using the Danish Awarding System in the Open Shows: Excellent, Very Good, Good, and Fair. 2. One entry from each section in the nine Open Shows divisions will be awarded Best in Show. 3. Cash awards will be distributed as follows: Five dollars ($5.00) for each Best in Show Rosettes will be awarded for Best in Class One dollar ($1.00) for Excellent 4. Entries not meeting general or division classifications will not be eligible for awards. OPEN CRAFT SHOWExhibitors may submit more than one entry per class or subclass but they must be of a different design and or variety and/or variety. The entries must have been created after August 1, 2007. Please call ahead to make advance arrangements if your entry is oversized or requires any special handling at 732-914-9466. Classes:

Exhibits must be properly mounted or framed with base support if needed. 2. Exhibits must be properly labeled as to type of material used and must be of original design. The entries must be created after August 1, 2007, and one entry per class or sub class. No photocopies of original art will be accepted. Entries made from kits are accepted in Division 2 only.

OPEN CAKE DECORATING SHOWExhibitors may submit only one entry per class. Classes: 1. “Summer-time Fun “ Cake Create a cake depicting summer fun. 2. “Flowers Everywhere” Cake Utilize your best flower-making techniques. 3. “Celebration” Tiered Cake Create a tiered cake, either stacked or with columns, for the festive occasion of your choice. (i.e. birthday, wedding, baby, graduation, etc.) 4. “Decorated Delight” Minis Decorate cupcakes or cookies (minimum of 3 cupcakes or cookies per entry.) NOTE: Piping skills count as much as creativity in all classes! OPEN FOODS SHOW1. Each entry must be displayed on a suitable plate. 2. The Committee are not responsible for broken or lost plates. 3. Each entry must be covered or wrapped with clear wrap. 4. All entries must be properly labeled. 5. Baked goods must be accompanied by an accurate recipe on a 5”x7” card. 6. Baked goods will be cut for judging and jarred foods will be opened for judging. 7. Entries prepared from commercial mixes will not be accepted. 8. Exhibitors may submit only one entry of each variety. 9. Preserved food must provide two jars, one for display and the other for sampling. Label with date canned on jar. DIVISION 1: CAKES Classes: 1. OPEN HONEY & BEESWAX SHOW1. All entries must have been produced by the exhibitor in New Jersey. It must be selected by the exhibitor or a family member. Only one entry in each class will be accepted from each exhibitor or apiary. 2. Identifying labels on entries are not permitted. No commercial products or displays will be allowed. 3. No single entry may be submitted again for three years. All entries remain the property of the producers. An accompanying carton containing the entries must carry the full name, address, and telephone number of the exhibitor. Entries must be submitted in a carton. It is suggested that a cover of some type be placed over the carton to keep the jars free of dust and dirt. Beeswax entries must be covered with clean, transparent plastic film. DIVISION 1: EXTRACTED HONEY (Queenline Jars Only)Classes: 1. Three 1-pound jars, extracted, Light 2. Three 1-pound jars, extracted, Light Amber 3. Three 1-pound jars, extracted, Amber 4. Three 1-pound jars, extracted, Dark Scoring Objectives, Extracted Honey _______Maximum Points a. Density 15.6 to 18.5 20 (Density of 18.6 or over, disqualified; 5 points deducted for each .05 of Density under 15.6) b. Freedom from crystals 10 c. Color and aroma 30 Color desirable is straw, canary, or lemon yellow. Deductions for objectionable aroma; fermenting causes disqualification. c. Uniformity of appearance 20 d. Absence of cracking or shrinking 15 Total 100 OPEN HORTICULTURE SHOW1. Exhibitors may enter as many classes as desired, but may submit only one entry of each variety per class or subclass. 2. Entries will be disqualified if diseased or insect-infested. 3. Glass bottles for cut specimens will be provided for 18” or less specimens. Exhibitor must supply larger bottles if needed. 4. Each entry must have been grown by the exhibitor. Container-grown plants must have been in the exhibitor’s possession for 6 weeks. 5. Plant containers must be labeled on the bottom of the pot including exhibitor’s name and telephone number. 6. Any containers exceeding 18” or plant height of 3’ must pre-register with OC Fair Office. 7. Cut specimens should have stems appropriate length for size of bloom.

DIVISION 5: VEGETABLES AND FRUITSClasses: 1. Beans (5 pods) 2. Root Vegetables ( 3 roots, foliage trimmed to 1”) 3. Cucumbers ( 2 specimens) 4. Peppers ( 3 specimens) 5. Squashes, Zucchinis (2 specimens) 6. Tomatoes (3 specimens): a. All ripe, no stem b. All green, with stem 7. Peas (5 pods) 8. Lettuces(2 heads or bunches) 9. Eggplants ( 2 specimens) 10. Any Other Vegetables (1-3 specimens) OPEN FLORAL DESIGN SHOW 1. All fresh plant material is required in Classes 1 , 2, and 3. Cut flowers, foliage, fresh fruit, and fresh vegetables are considered fresh plant material. 2. Dried plant material is required in classes 4 and 6 only. 3. Flowers need not be home-grown but must be arranged by exhibitor. 4. Exhibitors may submit only one entry per class. 5. No artificial flowers, foliage, fruits, or vegetables will be accepted. 6. Containers should be labeled underneath with exhibitor’s name and telephone number. Classes: 1. “In the Good Old Summertime” An interpretive floral design staged in a summer-themed container using all fresh plant material. 2. “Color Your World” A MONOCHROMATIC floral design using all fresh plant material and container of one hue and its tints and/or shades; for example, light pink through red to purple. The foliage shall be of natural color. 3. “Bounty by the Basket” A collection of at least two specimens of vegetables, fruits, or herbs pleasingly designed for artistic beauty in the exhibitor’s basket; basket not to exceed 24” in height or width. The collection must be accompanied by a typed or neatly printed list of materials included. Entries will be judged for overall design with consideration of horticultural perfection of the individual vegetables, fruits, and/or herbs displayed. 4. “Circle of Herbs” Wreath A wreath containing a minimum of two varieties of fresh herbs. Overall size not to exceed 18”. Wreaths must be displayed on a tray that holds water. 5. “Everlasting” Wreath A wreath containing a minimum of three varieties of dried plant material. Overall size not to exceed 26”. 6. “Crafty Creatures” A three-dimensional creature made from all dried materials such as seeds, nuts, pods, dried flowers, and/or dried materials. No fresh plant material, paint, ribbon, or candy permitted. 7. “Veggie Personality” A Character created from vegetables. Must be dressed to suit a theme-personality or the personality of the exhibitor. The character must be posed. The exhibitor must provide a base and support if needed. 8. “Three Cheers for the Red, White, and Blue” A traditional floral design using all three colors staged in a patriotic-theme container. OPEN PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW1. All photos must have been taken and mounted by entrants after August 1, 2007. Processing may have been done by commercial processor. 2. Photos can be any size from 5”x 7” to 9” x 12”. 3. Exhibitors may enter only one photo per class, and each photo may be entered in only one class. 4. No framed or matted entries will be accepted. Entries must be securely flush-mounted on mounting board, poster board, or foam board in such a way that no part of the photograph is covered, and no part of the mounting board is visible around the edges of the photograph. 5. The Ocean County Fair Committee retains one-time, nonexclusive rights to use winning photos in promotional advertising.
