The Open Shows are organized and staffed by the
MASTER GARDENERS OF OCEAN COUNTY
for the Ocean County Board of Agriculture.
Master Gardener Volunteers are certified by Rutgers Cooperative Extension
of Ocean County, after receiving extensive training and education. They
assist Rutgers Cooperative Extension in providing reliable gardening and
horticultural information to residents.

Gardeners also provide tick identification, plant diagnostics, and soil pH
testing at our location:

In addition to
these services, Master Gardeners offer seminars for the general public,
maintain a display garden at the Toms River location, host educational
displays at the Ocean County Fair and at other events, and are involved in
many other gardening-related activities in the community.

OPEN SHOW
RULES
1. Entries must
have been made by the exhibitor after August 1, 2008.
Exhibitors do not have to reside in Ocean County.
2. No exhibitor
may advertise or solicit orders.
3.
Sections to be judged separately are:
Youth (under age 18) Adults (age 18 and over)
Special (Residents of nursing homes or rehabilitation hospitals, and disabled
exhibitors)
4.
Entry tags must accompany all exhibits and must include the division
and class number.
Entry tags can be obtained at the time of entering entry at the
fairgrounds, from the website www.oceancountyfair.com
or in advance at:

5. Entries not
meeting class requirements will be disqualified.
6.
The Fair Committee will not be liable in any way for loss due to water, fire,
theft, acts of God, or any other causes.
7.
All entries (except Foods and Cake Decorating) can
be brought to the fairgrounds on Tuesday, July 14 from 5 PM to 9 PM or Wednesday,
July 15 from 12 NOON to 9 PM.
Judging
will be conducted on Thursday, July 16 and Friday, July 17.
8.
Food entries and Cake Decorating entries can be brought to the
fairgrounds on Wednesday, July 15 from 12 NOON to 6 PM.
Judging will begin at 6 :30 PM. Food entries and Cake Decorating
entries can be picked up after 9 PM the
same evening. If your item needs refrigeration bring closer
to 6pm.
There is no refrigeration.
9. All entries must remain on exhibit
for the duration of the Fair.
10. All
entries (except Foods and Cake Decorating) must be picked up on
Sunday, July 19 between 5 PM and 6:30 PM.
AWARDS
1. Ribbons will
be awarded for meritorious entries using the Danish Awarding System in the
Open Shows: Excellent, Very Good, Good, and Fair.
2. One entry from
each section in the nine Open Shows divisions will be awarded Best in
Show.
3. Cash awards
will be distributed as follows:
Five
dollars ($5.00) for each Best in Show
Rosettes
will be awarded for Best in Class
One
dollar ($1.00) for Excellent
4. Entries not meeting general or
division classifications
will not be eligible for awards.

OPEN HONEY & BEESWAX SHOW
1. All entries
must have been produced by the exhibitor in New Jersey. It must be selected
by the exhibitor or a family member. Only one entry in each class will be
accepted from each exhibitor or apiary.
2. Identifying
labels on entries are not permitted. No commercial products or displays
will be allowed.
3. No single
entry may be submitted again for three years. All entries remain the
property of the producers. An accompanying carton containing the
entries must carry the full name, address, and telephone number of the
exhibitor. Entries must be submitted in a carton. It is suggested
that a cover of some type be placed over the carton to keep the jars free of
dust and dirt. Beeswax entries must be covered with clean, transparent
plastic film.

Entries will be disqualified if diseased or insect-infested.
3.
Glass bottles for cut specimens will be provided for 18” or less
specimens. Exhibitor must supply larger bottles if needed.
4. Each entry
must have been grown by the exhibitor.
Container-grown plants must have been
in the exhibitor’s
possession for 6 weeks.
5. Plant
containers must be labeled on the bottom of the pot including exhibitor’s
name and telephone number.
6. Any containers
exceeding 18” or plant height of 3’ must pre-register with OC Fair Office.
7. Cut specimens
should have stems appropriate length for size of bloom.

OPEN
FLORAL DESIGN SHOW
1. All fresh
plant material is required in Classes 1 , 2, and 3. Cut
flowers, foliage, fresh fruit, and fresh vegetables are considered fresh
plant material.
2. Dried plant
material is required in classes 4 and 6 only.
3. Flowers need not be
home-grown but must be arranged by exhibitor.
4. Exhibitors may submit only
one entry per class.
5. No artificial flowers,
foliage, fruits, or vegetables will be
accepted.
6. Containers
should be labeled underneath with exhibitor’s name and telephone
number.
Classes:
1. “In the Good Old
Summertime”
An
interpretive floral design staged in a summer-themed container using all
fresh plant material.
2. “Color Your World”
A MONOCHROMATIC floral design using
all fresh plant material and container of one hue and its tints and/or
shades; for example, light pink through red to purple. The foliage
shall be of natural color.
3. “Bounty by the Basket”
A collection of at least two specimens
of vegetables, fruits, or herbs pleasingly designed for artistic beauty in
the exhibitor’s basket; basket not to exceed 24” in height or width.
The collection must be accompanied by a typed or neatly printed list of
materials included. Entries will be judged for overall design with
consideration of horticultural perfection of the individual vegetables,
fruits, and/or herbs displayed.
4. “Circle of Herbs” Wreath
A wreath containing a minimum of two
varieties of fresh herbs. Overall size not to exceed 18”. Wreaths
must be displayed on a tray that holds water.
5. “Everlasting” Wreath
A wreath containing a minimum of three
varieties of dried plant material. Overall size not to exceed 26”.
6. “Crafty Creatures”
A three-dimensional creature made from
all dried materials such as seeds, nuts, pods, dried flowers, and/or dried
materials. No fresh plant material, paint, ribbon, or candy permitted.
7. “Veggie Personality”
A Character created from
vegetables. Must be dressed to suit a theme-personality or the
personality of the exhibitor. The character must be posed. The exhibitor must
provide a base and support if needed.
8. “Three Cheers for the Red,
White, and Blue”
A traditional
floral design using all three colors staged in a patriotic-theme container.
OPEN PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW
1. All
photos must have been taken and mounted by entrants after August 1, 2008.
Processing may have been done by commercial processor.
2. Photos can be any size from
5”x 7” to 9” x 12”.
3.
Exhibitors may enter only one photo per class, and each photo may be entered
in only one class.
4. No
framed or matted entries will be accepted. Entries must be securely
flush-mounted on mounting board, poster board, or foam board in such a way
that no part of the photograph is covered, and no part of the mounting
board is visible around the edges of the photograph.
5. The Ocean
County Fair Committee retains one-time, nonexclusive rights to use winning
photos in promotional advertising.
